Grade 7:  Shape and Space – Measurement

SLO 2. Develop and apply a formula for determining the area of:

triangles

parallelograms

AI - Illustrate and explain how the area of a rectangle can be used to determine the area of a parallelogram.

1.  Area of a Paralellogram - Read the “Instructions” section and then the “Exploration” section. Try creating several different rectangles from the parallelogram. Make sure you find out what measurements of the parallelogram you need in order to find its area.

2.  Area of a Paralellogram--Calculations - Drag the orange dots on the vertices to move and resize the parallelogram. As the size of the parallelogram changes, the area will be recalculated.   Also try estimating the area of some parallelograms by clicking on “hide details.” Then, drag the orange dots on the vertices to make a random-sized parallelogram. Now estimate the area of the parallelogram just by looking at the squares inside it.

3.http://www.coolmath.com/reference/parallelograms.html#The_area_of_a_parallelogram – shows how to find the area of a parallelogram

4. http://www.onlinemathlearning.com/area-parallelogram-2.html - a variety of videos on how to find the area of a parallelogram

5. http://www.mathgoodies.com/lessons/vol1/area_parallelogram.html - shows how to find the area of a parallelogram.  Then you can practice questions.

AI - Generalize a rule to create a formula for determining the area of parallelograms.

6. http://illuminations.nctm.org/ActivityDetail.aspx?id=47 – an interactive tool to show why b x h = area of a parallelogram.

AI - Solve a given problem involving the area of triangles, parallelograms

7. http://www.studyzone.org/mtestprep/math8/g/areasl.cfm - shows students how to calculate the area of a parallelogram and triangle.  But it also shows a rectangle, rhombus and kite.  Student can them apply into a problem and check their answers.

8. http://interactive.onlinemathlearning.com/geometry_worksheets.php - if you click on parallelogram, you can choose the number of practice questions you would like to try.  Complete the questions by finding the area of the parallelogram based on the given measurements.

9. http://www.nelson.com/mathfocus/grade7/quizzes/ch05/mf7_ch._5_lesson_1try.htm - a series of 10 multiple choice questions on finding the area of a parallelogram.

10. http://www.studyzone.org/mtestprep/math8/g/areasl.cfm - shows students how to calculate the area of a parallelogram and triangle.  But it also shows a rectangle, rhombus and kite.  Student can them apply into a problem and check their answers.

11.  http://www.aaamath.com/geo78_x2.htm - show students a brief explanation on how to find the area of a parallelogram.  If you scroll to the bottom of the page, students can practice questions on how to calculate the area of a parallelogram.

AI -  Illustrate and explain how the area of a rectangle can be used to determine the area of a triangle.

12. http://www.aaamath.com/geo78_x6.htm - show students a brief explanation on how to find the area of a triangle.  If you scroll to the bottom of the page, students can practice questions on how to calculate the area of a triangle.

13. http://staff.argyll.epsb.ca/jreed/math8/strand3/3204.htm - you can use this interactive to see the calculation of the area of a triangle.  You can change the lengths of the sides and see how the perimeter and the area of the triangle change.  If you scroll to the bottom of the page, you can click on triangle calculator and type in the dimensions for a triangle.  It will calculate the area.

14. Video - http://www.ehow.com/video_4754341_find-area-triangle.html Finding the area of a triangle

15. http://www.mathgoodies.com/lessons/vol1/area_triangle.html - shows how to find the area of a triangle.  Then you can practice questions.

AI - Generalize a rule to create a formula for determining the area of triangles.

16. Area of a Triangle - To use Area of a Triangle, read the instructions for calculating area of a triangle at the top, and then scroll down to the practice section. Click the “Start” button to get a problem, and type your answer in the blank text box. Click the “Check” button to check each answer. The activity will keep track of how many correct answers you give.

17. Triangle Explorer - To use Triangle Explorer, look at the triangle on the grid and calculate the area. Type your answer into the blank text box and click the “Check Answer” button. Click the “New Triangle” button to try another triangle.

AI - Solve a given problem involving the area of triangles, parallelograms

18. http://algebra4children.com/area_of_triangle.html - To use, scroll to the bottom of the page.  You will be shown a triangle with measurements.  Find the area of the triangle and click the correct answer.  You will be given 10 questions.  See how you do.

19. http://www.hellam.net/maths2000/triangle1.html - There is a limited amount of interactivity built in to this resource. There is a default delay of 6 seconds between displaying one triangle and the next. You may change this to whatever value is most suitable for your students.

There is a reproducible worksheet for students to log their answers down on paper. You may use the resource either as a whole-class teacher-led activity or as an individual/small group resource, depending on how your classroom or computer lab is arranged.

As it stands, the resource achieves little more than a series of overhead projector transparencies and a stopwatch would for a resourceful teacher. However, the source code is available for teachers who wish to make the triangle dimensions more complex, substitute other shapes, add a text field or multiple choice buttons for students to answer the questions online or adapt it in other ways to suit their classroom.

20. http://interactive.onlinemathlearning.com/geometry_worksheets.php - if you click on triangle, you can choose the number of practice questions you would like to try.  Complete the questions by finding the area of the triangle based on the given measurements.

21. http://www.nelson.com/mathfocus/grade7/quizzes/ch05/mf7_ch._5_lesson_2try.htm - a series of 10 multiple choice questions on finding the area of a triangle.

22. http://www.zunal.com/webquest.php?w=57721 – webquest for students to find the area of a triangle

23. http://www.northeastern.k12.oh.us/rh/perfect_playground.htm - a webquest where students will create a playground.  Good review of perimeter, area of a rectangle, but also includes area of a triangle and area of a parallelogram.
